Agricultural Development and Resource Conservation (HI) ($1,400,000)
The requested funding would be used to stimulate agricultural development in Hawaii by providing training, management, and funding assistance through Hawaii's four RC&Ds to effectively utilize the resources released by the closure of sugarcane and plantation agriculture.
The Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) districts offer a proven community-based infrastructure that can tailor efforts to support sustainable development that is consistent with the unique needs of Hawaii’s varied rural communities. Early successes suggest that this statewide program merits continuation in FY2010 to facilitate agricultural development and conservation at the local level. The intent of this request is to continue a program to stimulate agricultural development in Hawaii by providing training, management, and funding assistance to effectively utilize the resources released by the closure of sugarcane and plantation agriculture
The RC&D Councils provide community-based leadership to address community specific issues rather than relying on state or federally driven initiatives.
Funds appropriated for this initiative will be directed by the federal agency to each of the four RC&D Councils in Hawaii. These in turn will develop and implement resource development and conservation programs under the broadly defined guidelines provided by the federal agency.
