Appropriations Request

Tropical and Subtropical Research (T-Star) ($10,000,000)

The requested funding would be used for tropical and subtropical research in the Pacific and Caribbean Basin.

This research grant exists to provide a mechanism to support the conduct of agricultural research of relevance to Hawaii, Pacific, and the Caribbean Basin tropical and subtropical agriculture. The grant reflects collaborative efforts between U.S. researchers in the Pacific and Caribbean Basins (e.g., Universities of Hawaii and Guam on the Pacific side and Universities of Florida, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands on the Caribbean side).

This project provides research that maintains and enhances production of tropical and subtropical agricultural products, while encouraging agricultural practices that are environmentally acceptable. Control of invasive alien species and weeks represent a major challenge to the preservation and sustainability of Pacific Island ecosystems.

The tropical and subtropical regions of the U.S. have unique agricultural challenges and opportunities with limited local resources and limited access to national sources of funding.  This initiative constitutes a set of activities not found in other parts of the U.S. agricultural research system and warrants continuation.
