Hawaii-New Mexico Sustainable Energy Security Partnership ($5,000,000)
New Mexico Tech and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) will expand their collabrative program in order to integrate, demonstrate, and deploy distributed energy systems that make use of conventional and renewable technologies.
Activities under this program include (1) the continued development of models and scenario analysis to evaluate high renewable penetration into the electricity grid; (2) validation of technology integration solutions through field demonstration; (3) models of resource requirements for crop production and conversion technologies; and (4) pre-commercial demonstration of a tropical biorefinery system.
HNEI was recently awarded a related project to address smart grid issues on Maui and also expects to receive a significant award from the Office of Naval Research for the optimal integration of renewable energy sources for commercial and military use.
Recipient: University of Hawaii
2444 Dole Street
Honolulu, HI 96822
Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: This project will continue efforts to address critically important but complex energy needs, addressing integration issues such as the high penetration of renewables onto the electricity grid and the cost-effective development and deployment of emerging biofuel technologies for power or fuels production.
