Appropriations Request

Iao Stream Flood Control, Maui ($250,000)

The requested funding would be used to complete the plans and specifications package and prepare the draft Project Cooperation Agreement for the Iao Stream Flood Control project on the island of Maui.

The existing project, in its current condition, is unable to withstand a 100-year frequency flood because it is deficient and, therefore, not certifiable under the FEMA levee certification program. The project will correct an unsatisfactory and dangerous condition that has existed since 1981 when high flows undermined existing levees. If not corrected, flood flows could inundate the adjacent housing and commercial areas. Certification of the existing project is required by February 2010 or the area protected by the existing project will revert to a flood hazard area. Construction of proposed modifications will correct these unsatisfactory and dangerous conditions making the project certifiable. The County of Maui Department of Public Works and Environmental Management is the sponsoring agency.
