Hana Highway Historic Bridge Preservation Plan - Island of Maui ($1,200,000)
The town of Hana is an isolated community located at the end of a 52-mile winding coastal mountain road on the island of Maui.
It takes 2-3 hours to travel the road, depending on traffic. Within the Hana Highway Historic District, there are 51 bridges and culverts owned by the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT). The proposed Preservation Plan will provide HDOT with a comprehensive approach to managing these bridges. This plan will document the process and rationale used in formulating the management recommendations for each bridge in the Hana Highway Historic District seeking a balance between historic preservation, public safety, budgetary considerations, and community input. This plan will provide the basis for replacing or rehabilitating the bridges on this highway. Until these bridges are improved, they will continue to be load-restricted to 10 tons. This load restriction has impacted the Hana community in increased cost for goods and services. Safety is also impacted because only smaller light weight fire trucks are permitted over these bridges. Many jobs will be created by the resulting projects. The total estimated cost of the project is $1,500,000.
