MEO Transit Administrative and Maintenance Facility - Island of Maui ($4,000,000)
This project would establish a new transportation center to ensure the continuation and improved delivery of needed transportation services on Maui.
Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) has planned a new 10-acre facility that would include a Transportation Services Building for vehicle maintenance and repair and parts and storage; administrative offices; facilities for bus washing and fueling stations; an emergency backup generator; bus parking/storage and off-street parking; Bus Passenger Transfer Station; site for a future Administrative building; and related improvements.
MEO began transportation services in 1969 when the need for senior transportation in the community became apparent. MEO currently operates specialized transportation services from two locations, both in Kahului, but existing facilities are cramped and inadequate for future needs. The new facility will contribute to efficiencies with the central location of storage, maintenance, and administration and keep operational costs down. The facility will accommodate long-term program expansion and allow the capacity to grow as need for services grow (within the next 5 to 7 years, the fleet is expected to be about 100 vehicles). Approximately 34 jobs will temporarily be created from construction of the facility. The facility will allow MEO to expand operations and therefore hire additional people. We estimate that 10 jobs will be created within completion and 30 jobs within 10 years.
