Puna Makai Alternative Route - Island of Hawaii ($2,000,000)
The project involves conducting an Environmental Impact Statement and Preliminary Engineering Report to identify alignment and design criteria for the Puna Makai Alternative Route to connect Nanawale Estates subdivision with the city of Hilo, the Hawaii County seat.
The project, once completed, will improve vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle, and transit circulation and safety in the fastest growing district on Hawaii Island. Currently, only one two-lane State highway serves the more than 25,000 existing lots in the immediate area of the proposed roadway. The total estimated cost of the project is $2,628,000.
