Waiaka Stream Bridge Replacement -- Island of Hawaii ($3,680,000)
The replacement and realignment of the Waiaka Bridge will have a significant impact on safety and relieving increasing traffic congestion in Kawaihae on the island of Hawaii.
The bridge is at a point where two major arteries intersect: Kohala Mountain Road (Hwy 250) and Kawaihae Road (Hwy 19). The current sharp curve of the approaches has line of sight problems that has caused problems for converging traffic. The stream that the bridge crosses has had flooding problems that also impact safety and warrants realignment and replacement. Funding is requested for design and right-of-way acquisition. The total estimated cost of the project is $4,600,000.
