Hana Harbor is located on the eastern shore of the island of Maui, Hawaii. Hana is a remote town that is almost 60 road miles from the main town of Wailuku (about a 3 hours drive) through windy narrow roads. Once a booming agricultural town with six sugar companies in operation, Hana is now a quiet small town for residents who prefer the rural setting and a quaint get-away for tourists. Hana’s remoteness serves both as a desired quality and a challenge. Hana Harbor serves as an important lifeline for the community. However, the shoreside infrastructure of Hana Harbor is in serious disrepair. The State of Hawaii has closed down the harbor pier due to its damaged and dangerous condition and any repair or rehabilitation remains at the bottom of the State’s priority list, given the small population. Goods needed to sustain the community are mostly brought in by truck over the long windy route.
Currently there is no ongoing Army Corps study or project at Hana Harbor. Additionally, the development and maintenance of shoreside infrastructure is typically the local government’s responsibility. Authorization is needed to assist the County and State with repair/replacement of the harbor infrastructure.
The authorization amount requested is $30,000,000, cost-shared between the U.S. Army Corps and the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.
