Kahului Harbor, Maui, HI

Kahului Harbor is faced with a critical situation due to a lack of sufficient harbor capacity to provide for the island’s needs.  It is the only commercial harbor servicing Maui and because of its location, it is constrained in terms of both berthing capacity and terminal space with only a potential for expansion available at the west coral stockpile area.  Sea-side accessibility to this potential expansion area will require dredging of a new turning basin and the construction of breakwater improvements.  These improvements are necessary in order to support the growth of cargo for the island of Maui.  I request authorization to implement navigational improvements necessary to develop this area for eventual commercial maritime use.

The authorization amount requested is $150,000,000, cost-shared between the U.S. Army Corps and the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.
